If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “how often should I deworm my dog?” you’re not alone; it’s a question that puzzles even the most attentive pet owners.
Unfortunately, the signs that your dog has worms aren’t always obvious, and just because you can’t see them, it doesn’t mean they’re not there. In this post, we’ll shed some light on how often you need to deworm your dog to keep them healthy and safe from gastrointestinal worms.
Worms might sound relatively harmless compared to other diseases, but make no mistake, they can severely impact your pet’s health. How often your dog will need treatment is determined by risk factors such as age, location, and lifestyle.
Your vet will be able to guide you, but if you have a puppy, or your adult dog lives outside, scavenges, works on a property, or has other health issues, you’ll likely need to treat them more regularly.
Nursing puppies are at a higher risk of reinfection and illness because of their developing immune systems. Puppies should be treated with Drontal® Puppy Suspension fortnightly from two weeks, then Drontal Allwormer® tablets or chews from eight to ten weeks of age until six months.
Aside from additional risk factors, all dogs over six months should be regularly treated against worms with an effective allwormer. Did you know that many of the deworming treatments on the market need to be dosed every month in order to ensure that your dog has complete protection?
However, when you treat your pet using Drontal Allwormer®, you’ll only need to remember to deworm them every three months to cover them from intestinal worms. Our best tip? Dose them at the start of each season so you can be sure you’ll never skip a treatment!
There’s no getting around it: intestinal worms are a fact of life for dogs. All of their favourite activities — walking, digging, eating, grooming — put them at risk of reinfection. But they also put us at risk too! Did you know that certain intestinal worm species — like roundworms — are zoonotic, meaning they can pass from animals to humans?
The only way to keep your pet and your family safe from intestinal worms is by committing to a regular deworming treatment. Not only will this treat and control your dog’s adult worms, but it will break the reinfection cycle.
There are three criteria to look for when choosing the right allwormer for your dog:
While there aren’t many brands on the market that check these boxes — Drontal Allwormer® does! Drontal® is perfect for dogs of all shapes and sizes and comes in various palatable chews and tablets. You can also rest assured that it’s 100% safe to combine with your dog’s regular heartworm treatment too.
So, there you have it — the mystery around how often you should deworm your dog is solved! Make a deworming treatment part of your dog’s regular care routine every three months to help them thrive!
