Top Things to do in Melbourne this December?

Krystal Spittal • December 11, 2019

Melbourne in December, there is nowhere in the world I would rather be!

Okay, I may be a tiny bit biased, but hear me out. Whether you’re a foodie, beach lover, sports lover, muso or anything in-between, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this beautiful city!

Here is a list of my top things to do in Melbourne this December.

Enjoy a drink on the Arbory Afloat

The Arbory Afloat is back and better than ever. This giant floating pontoon has once again set itself on the Yarra River, and the theme for this year is Miami in the 1970s. Probably the most exciting part is the introduction of Arbory Afloat's own pool, which is located on the upper deck level. Don't forget your bathers!

See a show at the Arts Centre

Don't miss CHICAGO, the razzle-dazzle Broadway Musical coming to Arts Centre this December. CHICAGO has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz; one show-stopping song after another; and the slickest dancing in town.

Spend a day at the MCG

You cannot visit Melbourne without seeing a sporting event at the mighty MCG. You’re in luck in December where you can see Australia V New Zealand in the Boxing Day Test. The iconic Boxing Day Test is full of great experiences, and watching the match is just one of them!

Grab a bite to eat at Queen Victoria Market

Spend your Wednesday nights surrounded by food at Queen Victoria Market. There are 130 stalls in total including not only food but festival bars, art, fashion, homewares and general knick-knack merchandise traders. Food stalls will be cooking up delicious snacks all night long, with plenty of wine, beer and cocktails also on the menu.

Relax on Melbourne’s most famous beach - St Kilda

Just six kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, St Kilda beach is a favourite among both locals and visitors. Whether you want to be next to, in, on or under the water, St Kilda has lots of fun things to. Rollerblade or cycle along the foreshore, rustle up a game of beach volleyball or cricket, enjoy an ocean swim or lie on the beach and read a book. There are also plenty of cafes and bars nearby to enjoy.

Watch a Christmas movie at Federation Square

Get into the festive spirit with free screenings of your Christmas faves at Federation Square. All moviegoers at each screening are provided with free popcorn and sugarplum fairy floss, so bring along all your friends and family for a cost-free night of fun.

Finish December and the Year with BANG!

See one of the best fireworks displays in the world in Melbourne on New Year’s Eve. There is no better way to see out the year, and the best thing is, you can view the fireworks from almost everywhere in the CBD or surrounding suburbs.

With so much to do and see in Melbourne this December, where else would you want to be?
