You know exactly where you want to go when you visit Australia as well. You’ve seen photos of Bondi and Sydney Harbour or the laneways in Melbourne. But have you ever thought of venturing west?
Perth, Western Australia is the world’s most isolated capital city and with a population of just under 2 million, a whole lot smaller than other major cities. But P erth is also a vibrant and culture rich city, with amazing beaches. So, here are the top 10 things to do in Perth if you are already living here, or if you haven’t left home yet, here are some reasons that Perth is just as good (if not better than) the east coast. Shh, don’t tell the other people2people offices I said that. We’ll countdown from 10 to one.
Not only is Margaret River famous for its amazing chocolate factory, the region also has world-class wineries, breweries, and caves! This region could definitely give the Barossa, Yarra, and Hunter Valley’s a run for their money. The area is also home to the little town of Margaret River, with a pumping swell and an international competition every Easter. So, if you’ve always dreamed of learning to surf, Margaret River might just be the place for you. Who knows, maybe you’ll catch a glimpse of Kelly Slater or Tyler Wright.
If you don’t have the time to get down to Margaret River, how about getting to the Swan Valley , where there are amazing wineries, breweries and cheese factories. And if they don’t tickle your fancy, you could pop around to Caversham Wildlife Sanctuary and check out some of Australia’s cuddly animals - and don’t worry, they keep the drop bears away from the visitors.
Kings Park is located near the Perth CBD and is easily accessible by public transport, stroll around and see the view of the CBD (which is amazing at night)- not many other places can give you such a great view of their city from such a beautiful park.
It’s an Instagram celebrity in its own right, so the Perth Boat Shed along the Swan River is a great place for you to take your new profile pic. And while you’re there, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to see some of our local birds.
Melbourne’s got the Old Melbourne Gaol, famous for holding Ned Kelly, but how about checking out Fremantle Prison where the likes of serial killer Martha Rendell and Perth’s very own bushranger, Moondyne Joe was held. And if you stay late enough, maybe you’ll get a ‘ghostly visit with one of the old prisoners. Yes, Fremantle Prison is said to be haunted.
Forget Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Markets, Fremantle Markets are wayyy better. Located in the gorgeous city of Fremantle, close to the ocean and with beautiful food. Not only are the Fremantle Markets only 25 minutes from Perth but you can take a dip and get food all on one day!
Bondi Beach might be famous for its hot lifeguards but Perth has Cottesloe Beach and our lifeguards aren’t too bad either. Plus, the beach is much less crowded than Bondi, making it way easier to park yourself on the beach and just watch the surf.
Located outside of the CBD, the Perth Hills and further afield have some pretty great hidden gems that the Dandenong’s just can’t compare to. If you’re up for it, take a hike in Kalamunda and find the beautiful Rocky Pools or if you’re feeling really adventurous visit Serpentine Falls and take a swim there.
This is probably the biggest reason that Perth is better than any other city in Australia. We have quokkas. Again, another Instagram star, these cute fluffy marsupials live on the small island of Rottnest , located just a hop, skip and a jump across from Perth. Or a ferry if you didn’t do great in long jump. Just ask Roger Federer or Chris Hemsworth about our quokkas. They have, “been there, done that"
Perth CBD is located along the banks of the gorgeous Swan River. Okay, most Australian cities are on a river but ours is wide and a vibrant blue. If you wanted to visit Sydney’s Darling Harbour, why not go somewhere a little less noisy? Check out our Elizabeth Quay. While you’re in the CBD, pop into London Court; check out “that cactus thingy” as the locals call it, in Forrest Chase; have a look at the Supreme Court Gardens; and, come in and say “Hi” to the people2people Perth team. If you are looking for temp work whilst enjoying your Australian working holiday, we’d love to introduce you to some of Perth’s top employers. Build your career skills as well as creating amazing memories whilst you are on your adventure of a lifetime.
Have fun…. and, see you in Perth!
